ADULT DAY CARE NETWORK

With summer definitely over, you maybe returning to a winter schedule with your favorite activities such as painting, arts & crafts or computer lessons. However, if you are responsible for the care and supervision of an elderly relative or friend and you hesitate to leave them at home, Network of Adult Day Care Centers in Rhode Island maybe able to help you with your situation and develop an effective care plan.

Seniors need help if they are to remain in the community and continue to be independent. These centers have nurses on staff to monitor health, help administer medications and they are watchful for any significant changes in physical or emotional conditions.

SENIORS CAN MAINTAIN GOOD EYESIGHT

Do you have good eyesight or are you having some difficulty at times focusing?  Do your eyes feel a little dry?   Certain eye disorders and disease occur more frequently in older persons, but with some simple preventive measures, seniors can help protect their eyesight.

·              Have regular health check-ups to treat disease such as high blood pressure or diabetes.  Both conditions can cause eye problems.

·              Have a complete eye examination at least every two years.  The exam should include a vision evaluation, eye muscle check, a glaucoma test and internal and external eye exams;

·              If your family history shows diabetes or eye disease, you should schedule more frequent eye examinations.  Make an immediate appointment if you are experiencing eye pain, loss or dimness of vision, excessive redness or swelling.

FACTS ABOUT THE FLU AND PNEUMONIA VACCINE

The flu and pneumonia are the fifth-leading cause of death in the senior population. So getting the flu and pneumonia vaccine could save your life!   Since your doctor knows your health history, allergies, etc., it is best to receive your flu shot from your doctor.

Some facts you should know:

·             Doctors recommend that everyone age 65 and over get these vaccines.

·              These vaccines are available at most doctor’s offices and clinics, and are fully reimbursed by Medicare.

You cannot get the flu or pneumonia from the shot.

 TICKET TO WORK:

These services include a comprehensive assessment; drafting of resumes and cover letters; job readiness skills;  job search activities and job retention services.  If you are a recipient of SSI or SSDI and believe this program may benefit you, please call Bob McIntyre at 272-7474 (rmcintyre@davincicenter.necoxmail.com) for more information or to schedule an appointment.

CAREER DEVELOPMENT:

JOB/CAREER COUNSELING & JOB PLACEMENT

JOB PLACEMENT SERVICES:  At the DaVinci Center all job placement services are based on the individual.  A personalized approach is used to discover an individual’s skills and abilities that can match a potential employer’s needs and interest.  This approach has proven to be very successful for many people seeking employment.  There are two areas that are key for making this program a success, and they are as follows:

1)      JOB/CAREER COUNSELING:  By using various tools an assessment is completed to determine an individual’s interests and abilities.  Areas are identified that need to be developed or improved such as writing a resume, improving interviewing skills, completing job applications, etc.. Mock interviews are conducted so that the individual is better prepared for the actual interview.  Following up with the individual and/or employer after an interview is also key since it can be determined what, if any areas, need to be improved before continuing the job search; and

2)      JOB DEVELOPMENT:   A job developer is responsible for assessing employment trends and labor market information.  He will also work to acquire knowledge of what qualities and attributes an employer is looking for in an employee.  The job developer will develop a list of employer resources that includes direct contact with employers employment availability; job postings in newspapers; employer web sites; job search web site, as well as listings from the RI Department of Labor and Training.  The goal is to match the employer's needs with a job seeker that has the appropriate experience, skills and qualities.  When someone comes to the DaVinci Center seeking help in obtaining a job, the job developer will work with that individual and provide as much assistance and support as needed.  This may include creating resumes, drafting cover letters, conducting job searches, assisting with on-line applications and contacting employers.  The DaVinci Center also has a computer lab that job seekers may use as well as faxing services.  Job seekers have been assisted to employment in the banking industry, call center operations, medical offices, hospitals, printing companies, retail and clerical positions among others.

If you or someone you know would like employment assistance, call Bob McIntyre at 272-7474.

CASE MANAGEMENT SERVICES:

North End residents under 60 years of age can receive help in the following areas:

Screening, information, and assistance regarding eligibility for government and other benefit programs (including WIC, health insurance, and Section 8 housing); referrals and advocacy for financial assistance with rent and utility bills; emergency food and help with budgeting, if needed; furniture bank applications; used clothing; referrals for health, mental health, and dental care; and more.  We would be glad to speak with you regarding any other personal issues if needed.  All information is strictly confidential.  Call Kate Muir for an appointment Monday through Friday, 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.

EDUCATION:

Tutoring tips:

More waiting and less talking!!!  It is natural to want to help your student when he/she is struggling.  But at times it is best to let your student spend time considering material before you rush into supplying answers.  Assist the student with a few hints is needed, then sit back and let the him/her work through the problem.  Sometimes waiting silently is the most effective teaching tool you can use.
